Off to a hot start: October Recap

Miami caps off October as division leaders with at 5-1. The Heat started their season strong with a home victory against the Milwaukee Bucks. They would later come up short to bitter rivals, Indiana Pacers, in a 102-91 defeat in overtime. Miami would bounce back and start a four-game winning streak against Orlando, Charlotte, Brooklyn, and Memphis to wrap up their first month of the season.

Miami enjoyed plenty of offense from multiple players. Tyler Herro was red-hot to start. He scored 27 against the Bucks and 30 in the OT loss to the Pacers. Bam Adebayo also had a big night against the Brooklyn Nets. He posted a team-high 24 points and nine rebounds against the Nets. Heat captain Jimmy Butler led the Heat in scoring against the Magic, Hornets, and Grizzlies. The Heat is off to a great start. Collecting early wins on the road and home will work wonders to boost the fans and chemistry in a long NBA season.

Week 1 Review

Miami started off their opening week 1-1 with a huge win over the Milwaukee Bucks and a loss to the Indiana Pacers in overtime. Here are the good, the bad, and the ugly from both games.

The Good

The Heat have been very effective rebounding the ball in both games despite the record. In both games, Miami was able to outrebound their opponents 113-93. Bam has led the team in both games with 13 against the Bucks and 16 against the Pacers. Tyler Herro has been on fire early this season. Against the Bucks, Herro dropped 27 points and six rebounds and got a 30 point double-double against the Pacers.

The Bad

Although the Heat picked up a huge win against the defending champ Milwaukee, the Bucks are suffering from injuries. Jrue Holiday was out with a heel injury, Brook Lopez did not play due to back stiffness and Donte DiVincenzo is still recovering from surgery on his ankle. All three players were instrumental to the Bucks success in winning the chip. While it is a good win, Miami has yet to be really tested by the Bucks until Milwaukee is at full strength. The Pacers on the other hand also have their star player (TJ Warren) due to surgery for a stress fracture. In the end, they still had enough to push Miami to OT and come out with the win.

The Ugly

Fouls are a game killer. They kill possessions, they kill momentum and they kill chances to win a game. The Heat led both games with the most fouls 51-44. Bam, Jimmy, and others so far have been the culprit for most of the team’s fouls. This is going to be the case when Miami wants to be aggressive on defense and force turnovers but this will be a bigger issue if it continues down the stretch.

Heat Preview/Summer Recap

Basketball is finally back! The Miami Heat begins their road to the championship tonight against the defending champion Milwaukee Bucks. Here’s a quick rundown of notable changes before tonight’s tip-off.

Free Agent Pickups

We last saw Miami getting swept by the Bucks in the playoffs. Since then Miami has chopped and changed its personnel. Miami was very active in the free-agent market. After letting Andre Iguodala and Trevor Ariza go they landed a pair of former NBA Champions in Kyle Lowry and P.J. Tucker. Both players help bring championship pedigree and defensive prowess to the team. They also resigned Gabe Vincent, Dewayne Dedmon, and Udonis Haslem.

Summer League standout

Although Miami did not have a pick in the draft, it feels like they have thanks to Omer Yurtseven. The seven-footer went undrafted and played for Miami’s Summer League team. He averaged 7 ppg and 6 rbs over 12 minutes per game. His performances landed him a spot on the team and Spoelstra another piece to make the team more versatile.

Redemption Year?

Many people are having serious questions about Tyler Herro and Duncan Robinson following their disappointing season. Both players struggled heavily against the Bucks perimeter defense. However, both players looked efficient in the preseason campaign. Herro averaged 22 ppg while Robinson hovered around 10 ppg

Miami can set the tone with how their season will go and it starts tonight by beating the Bucks and sending a message to the NBA world that we are coming.

Really late Playoff picks

First things first, Thank you guys for all of the support this year, it has gotten me through tough times. I’m also planning on transitioning my content to are more streamlined content that helps me out. Stay tuned.

This year’s NBA Playoffs are already going down in history but as tipoff begins for the final eight times, I’m tossing in my super late picks for each round and why.

Heat vs Bucks

Who wins: Heat in 6

Why?: Much of the media is taking the Bucks and attribute this due to the series loss last year after they collapsed in the ECF to Miami in addition to acquiring Jrue Holiday. I’m not buying this. Yes, the Bucks have improved but Miami will be much more prepared than the Bucks. The Heat still has the edge over the Bucks in Championship experience, intangibles, and gameplan.

Mavericks vs Clippers

Who wins: Mavericks in 6

Why?: This is also another rematch from last year’s playoffs. Both teams have been on great streaks to end the season but for me, it comes down to whose bench can contribute. I think Dallas has a deeper bench and can help ease the scoring responsibilities on Doncic and Prozingis whereas for LA it’s almost Reggie Jackson or bust because Kawhi and PG can’t be the only ones to shoulder scoring this series.

Celtics vs Nets

Who wins: Nets in 5

Why? As great as the Celtics are, Tatum would need to continue to score 50+ points to Boston a fighting chance. With Brown still hurt and the other scoring threat being Kemba, Nets will be too much to handle between KD, Kyrie, and James Harden. They will most likely want to end this series early to continue to rest.

Trailblazers vs Nuggets

Who wins: Trailblazers in 6

Why? I feel that the injury to Jamal Murray hurts Denver’s chances for a deep playoff run. Jokic is still a key part of the team but now he will have a bigger target on him during this series. Portland, on the other hand, has some injuries of their own but they still have a good enough squad to overcome Denver.

Wizards vs 76ers

Who wins: 76ers in 5

Why?: This is the only matchup so far that felt closest to a clean sweep but I feel that 76ers are suspect and can let a game or two slip before sealing the deal.

Lakers vs Suns

Who wins: Lakers in 6

Why?: As beat up as the Lakers are, I think they can claw their way past a good Phoenix team that is second in the West. This matchup is going to be filled with trips to the free-throw line that will ultimately help set the tone for this series.

Hawks vs Knicks

Who wins: Knicks in 6

Why?: This series can honestly go either way. I would imagine that if defense means anything then New York will send Atlanta home. They are one of the best defensive teams this year, credit to Thibodeau, and they have a great blend of young players with veterans. I expect Atlanta to make this a series the Knicks will advance.

Grizzlies vs Jazz

Who wins: Jazz in 6

Why?: The Grizzlies have been battling their way late in the season to get in the playoff seedings and I feel that their trip stops here. As great as they have been playing, the Jazz, overall, has a deeper team and will slow down Valanciunas and Morant despite having Donovan Mitchell injured.

5 thoughts about the Heat versus the Magic

It was easy to be confident as a Heat fan before tip-off. We witnessed the Heat fight their way to the NBA Finals, keep much of their team in the offseason while adding productive players, draft a promising forward, and have historically been superior against the Magic. It was the making of a coming-out party, but it was spoiled to in-state rival Orlando who handed Miami their first loss of the season

Turnovers killed Miami

Turnovers plagued Miami once again. Despite it being the first game of the regular season, it was still painful to watch the one thing that held Miami back last season reared its ugly head again. The Heat chalked up 22 turnovers compared to the Magic’s 18. Bam, unfortunately, had the most on the team with seven turnovers, only one more than Butler.

Guard play lifted the Magic

The Magics had a game plan and came to play. Orlando’s guards combined for 69 points, more than half of their total. Evan Fournier led the team with 25 points and sparked a late run to send Miami home. Throughout the game, Orlando kept rotating guards and each once gave Miami a unique look. Each guard shifted gears and kept Miami unbalanced defensively. Fournier was able to drive home the dagger with a three-point game in the final minute of the game.

Rusty much?

Although Miami kept the game close, they had signs of rust in their first game. As a team, they posted a better Field Goal Percentage than Orlando but lost in other aspects of the game. Orlando outmuscled Miami in rebounds and came up with more steals than the Heat.  They also held a slim margin in fouls and took advantage of their fast-break points.

The Heat are not alone

One of the bright spots of this game is that it’s early in the season and plenty of other contenders have started on the wrong end of the win column. On opening day, the reigning NBA Champion Los Angeles Lakers had their opener spoiled by crosstown rival LA Clippers. The Milwaukee Bucks and the Toronto Raptors lost their season openers as well. So many fans are feeling the same way that Miami does.

Pelicans on Christmas Day

Miami plays New Orleans on Christmas Day and if there’s one thing that I want for Christmas is for Miami to finish the game with less than 20 turnovers. The game with be nationally televised and I would hate to start that day off by seeing them lose another game. The Pelicans look impressive in winning their opener against the Raptors. If Miami plays the way how they played yesterday then it’s going to be a long game

The Heat are back!

After a very short offseason and a much shorter preseason, the Miami Heat start their 2020-21 season on the road against the Orlando Magic. After a bitter loss to the Los Angeles Lakers last season in the NBA Finals, Miami will have a fresh start as they build momentum. Despite the Heat improving individually and as a unit, the road to the finals got even harder. Boston’s core of Tatum, Walker, and Brown is a problem, Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving instantly make Brooklyn ECF favorites, Philly has made managerial changes and Toronto always put together good performances in the regular season.

Fortunately for the Heat, they are big favorites to beating the Orlando Magic and starting the season 1-0. Expect to see plenty of the first-round pick Precious Achiuwa. The rookie has reportedly been making great strides since draft day and his skill set will translate well against Orlando’s athletic big men. It will be exciting to see how Achiuwa blends in with Butler, Adebayo, Herro, and Dragic. It will also be interesting to see how head coach Erik Spoelstra utilize him throughout the game.

As far as injuries go, guard Gabe Vincent is listed as day-to-day with a knee injury whereas Orlando has a plethora of injuries. Johnathon Isaac, Al-Farouq Aminu is listed as out while Mo Bamba and former Heat player James Enniss III are listed as day-to-day. The addition of Avery Bradley is vital as the Heat will need perimeter defense to help keep rookie Cole Anthony, Markelle Fultz, and Evan Fournier in check.

The Heat kick off their season on Wednesday with tip-off at 7 pm at the Amway Center.

Herro big performance seals Game 4

Guys get used to the Herro puns. You are gonna hear them for the next 48 hours. Heat rookie Tyler Herro became the talk of the series after his 37-point performance against the Celtics. His heroics has brought the Heat a step closer to heading to the NBA Finals. Here are five reasons how the Heat claimed game four.

Free throws
Miami took advantage of their trips to the free-throw line. They converted 88 percent of their free-throw attempts. Boston earned slightly less free throws and posted a slightly lower percentage.

Tatum cold streak
Although Jayson Tatum led the Celtics in scoring, he had a nightmare start in the first half. He had zero points at halftime on 0-6 shooting. Tatum got going late, but it was not enough to hold off the Heat.

Points in the paint
Both teams were even with points in the paint. Although Boston edged Miami in rebounds, both teams matched other another with 38 points in the paint. This was a crucial area for the game because Miami was fortunate enough to earn trips to the free-throw line on top of attacking the paint.

Limiting turnovers
Miami had a relatively clean night with eight turnovers while Boston committed a whopping 19 turnovers. The Celtics ill-advised turnovers stifled their offense and helped the Heat maintain their slim lead. Tatum accounted for six of those turnovers.

Herro heroics
Let us remove the rookie status from Herro. He’s earned it. Tyler Herro A.K.A Boy Wonder, A.K.A Walking Bucket, A.K.A Ty-305 put the Heat on his back last night. Herro kept Miami on pace with Boston with excellent decision-making and consistent shot. By halftime, Herro already had 20 points. Herro added another 17 points and sealed the game with 3 pointers to help the Heat grab game four.

Heat versus Celtics showdown

This is a short post, but the day is finally here. Game one of the Eastern Conference Finals begins tonight at 6:40 pm on ESPN. The winner of this matchup gets a trip to the NBA Finals. I’m sticking with the Heat to win this series, but this is another series that they need to earn. Both teams meet in the ECF for the first time since 2010. Ladies and gentlemen, get your popcorn ready, clear your schedule, and get ready for a crazy series.
